Celebrity makeup artist Max Made’s top tips

Max Made is makeup artist to some of Australia’s biggest stars – so what’s his best beauty advice for us mere mortals?

After more than a decade in the beauty industry, Max Made has witnessed firsthand the rise of social media and its influence on makeup trends, perpetuated by YouTube “beauty gurus” and Insta-influencers.

“There’s been a massive shift and people are becoming more knowledgeable of trends,” says Max.

“With Instagram at our fingertips, people have easier access to tips and tricks with makeup techniques.”

When it comes to beauty trends in Australia, Max thinks we’re less trend-driven and more focused on minimal makeup.

“Australians have always had a “less-is-more” approach to makeup. We gravitate to looks that are timeless,” he says.

Over the years Max has worked with big-name celebrities, including Rose Byrne, Naomi Watts, Jodi Gordon, Ricki Lee, Olympia Valance and Elyse Taylor.

“As for someone I’d like to work with, it would have to be Gigi Hadid,” he says.

What Max wants you to know about makeup

“Don’t be afraid of being more experimental,” Max says.

“Make-up is about experimenting; it’s about how you feel. You shouldn’t be scared of it.

“Try new things that you wouldn’t normally try, like adding a bold lip, applying false lashes or trying contour.

“Start highlighting and playing up the features you like, and stop trying to cover up features you don’t like.”

Max’s can’t-live-without beauty products

Made has recently been named official makeup ambassador for Australian beauty brand Nude by Nature, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

“I’ve been working alongside Nude by Nature for three years, so making my role with the brand official is the icing on the cake,” Max says.

He says staples in his makeup kit include the Touch of Glow Highlight Stick in Champagne, and the Contour Palette, both available at Chemist Warehouse.
