How to get the super-shiny glass hair bob

Seen on celebrities and It girls worldwide, the high-shine glass hair bob is chic, sharp – and absolutely achievable with these professional styling tips.

It’s a blunt cut, heat-styled dead straight, with a high-shine finish – and it’s fast become the trending hairstyle of 2020.

The super-shiny glass hair bob is officially having a moment, but the real beauty of this modern, polished look is it suits a variety of women and is relatively simple to maintain.

Straighteners and sleek trends

The popularity of home hair straighteners has correlated with the rise in sleek hair trends.

A 2011 Mintel study found a quarter of women believed they “can’t live without their straighteners” and a global predictive study forecasts that the demand will continue to rise.

Beauty Boss Business hair and make-up artist Melanie Burnicle believes the super-shiny glass hair bob is ideal for home hair-straightening aficionados.

“This look’s smooth shine and sleek lines are achieved by using a straightening iron and when combined with a blunt cut, it creates a look with a powerful edge,” she says.

Key features of a glass hair bob

The bob has been around for more than a century – and Franck Provost Salon senior stylist Amy Barton says it’s a deserved “classic”.

But what sets the super-shiny glass hair bob apart from previous incarnations is its subtle defining characteristics.

“This bob is super shiny and glossy and has an almost mirrored, halo effect,” explains Amy.

“To emphasise the high-octane shine, the bob is also blunt cut so it’s either one length or slightly concave, meaning it will be longer at the front.”

Who is the glass hair bob look best for?

Considering making the chop? Amy says a stylist can easily tailor this look to suit a variety of individual face shapes.

“This style is best suited to oval or heart shaped faces, but if your face is rounder, it can be adapted with more length and longer layers to frame the face.”

Melanie adds that hair type also needs to be taken into consideration.

“This is an easy look for naturally straight hair, but fine and thick hair can also work. Wavy hair would need to be regularly blown out to sleek.”

How to maintain the glass hair bob at home

It’s one thing to leave the salon with a perfectly styled super-shiny glass hair bob – but you’ll also need to maintain the look at home.

When styling, Amy recommends starting with a heat protectant spray and then using a bristle brush to blow-dry hair straight.

For that highly reflective finish, Amy recommends misting on a shine spray and then running a straightening iron over your locks for “a super sleek finish”.

You can also use a little hairspray to tame any fly-aways, but Amy warns not to go overboard as it will “appear matte and detract from the shine”.

For long-term care, Melanie recommends applying a regular hydrating treatment and also seeing your stylist for regular trims.

“To retain its sleek sharp effect this look needs to be in pristine shape,” she says.
