3 things that set Manuka honey apart from the rest

The unique properties of this liquid gold from New Zealand make it one of the sweetest gifts of all.

Honey is often referred to as the nectar of the Gods for a reason. In its various forms, it has been used as a healing agent and natural supplement for almost as long as time itself.

But not all honey is created equal in terms of benefits and taste. Manuka honey is THE ‘bees-knees’ stuff that the honey experts are talking about.

So what separates Manuka from your average honey?

1. It comes from the nectar of the Manuka tree

Manuka honey is made by bees that pollinate the evergreen and flowering plant known in New Zealand as Manuka (or leptospermum scoparium).

Comvita’s Manuka honey range is produced from hives located in some of the remote and untouched parts of New Zealand.

From the rugged central North Island volcanic plateau to the bush clad hills of Northland, hives are spread across the country.

2. Manuka honey has three key compounds that make it unique

Genuine Manuka honey contains three key antibacterial compounds- leptosperin, dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and methylglyoxal (MGO) – that set it apart from other honey.

It is this combination that makes Manuka honey so special, with some researchers referring to antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and healing properties.

3. Manuka honey is graded so you know it’s the good stuff

There are number of different grading systems used to measure these unique signature chemical markers in Manuka honey, including the widely accepted UMF grading systems by the aptly named Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association.

In a nutshell – the higher the grading number, the higher the concentration and purity of signature compounds.

Comvita’s Manuka honey range carries the UMF trademark, which means products are tested both by the company itself and independent laboratories.

From honey to lozenges to wound gel, the range comes in different UMF grades for health and wellbeing, from UMF5+ for everyday wellness to high grade UMF20+ for special uses.

And finally, the taste …

It’s a fun fact we needed to share: Like a good wine, Manuka honey is said to grow in flavour and darken over time.

And the higher the UMF number, the more intense the flavour sensation. Pass the toast!
