Why you probably need more healthy fats in your diet

More energy, improved focus and staying fuller for longer are just some of the benefits healthy fats can bring to your life.

There was a time when the f word – “fats” – would have had us running for the hills.

And while, yes, there are bad fats (hello trans fats), we now understand that good or healthy fats can bring us LOTS of health benefits.

Healthy fats can help us absorb vitamins, make us feel full so we don’t overeat, speed up our metabolism, help regulate blood sugar and lots more.

And these are two healthy fats worth getting familiar with:

MCT oil

It may sound like something you put in your car, but MCT oil is actually an incredible natural fatty acid that is instantly converted to energy in the liver (and isn’t stored as fat).

Containing medium-length chains of fats called triglycerides, their shorter chain length means MCTs are more rapidly broken down and absorbed by your body (i.e. they’re metabolised differently than the long-chain triglycerides found in most foods.)

That makes them a speedy energy source without the crash that can come with sugar or caffeine.

Where can you find it?

We love a bit of choice and Melrose offer three alternatives catering to different needs.

Melrose MCT Oil Brain Power is made with the shortest chain fatty acids, C6, C8 and C10, providing a quick burst of energy to banish brain fog and help improve focus.

Melrose MCT Oil Kick Start contains C8 and C10 MCTs, which have been shown as most effective to support a ketogenic or intermittent fasting diet. Kick Start may help you burn fat for fuel and can suppress cravings for carbs and sugar.

And then there’s Melrose MCT Oil Energy and Exercise, made with the longer chain MCTs, C8, C10 and C12, and designed to support endurance exercise — keeping you fuelled for long workouts and training sessions.

Light and tasteless, each can easily be added to drinks and foods. Pop them in your coffee or add them to your smoothie to fuel your day.

Flaxseed oil

And then there’s flaxseed oil. One of the richest plant-based sources of omega-3, flaxseed oil is the vegan alternative to fish oil you may be looking for.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to overall health, supporting everything from heart health, brain health and cognition, healthy joints and bones and even the health of your skin.

But modern diets are generally low in omega-3s and high in omega-6s, an imbalance that can lead to a range of health issues. Adding flaxseed oil can help address this and support overall health and wellbeing.

Melrose Flaxseed Oil is sourced form organic farms that use no pesticides or herbicides and is cold-expeller pressed to retain optimal nutrients.

With a delicious creamy and nutty taste that pairs perfectly as a salad dressing, finishing oil, or added into a smoothie, it’s another easy way to up your healthy fats uptake!
