Kayla Itsines on how to start the new year the right way

The personal trainer and author shares her tips for the year ahead, and it’s all about putting your best foot forward.

New year, new me – year round: Go into 2018 thinking in your head, ‘I want to end the year on a positive note’. The start of the year is a fantastic time, but we have to have that approach at the start of the year, the middle of the year and the end of the year. We can’t drop the ball, we need to stay motivated.

Trigger happy: Write down your triggers, the things that trigger you to not make the right choice. Know what your triggers are. If it’s wine, when do you have that, why do you have that? Perhaps you choose wine to unwind, so write that down. Then think about what other ways you can unwind and have that same feeling? There’s yoga, walking, going to dinner with friends. Slowly try to implement those things instead of having that wine and you change your habits completely.

Find an exercise you love: Just go for a walk, go for a bike ride, get a skipping rope and skip. Just doing a little bit of cardio that’s low intensity will make you feel great. It’s nice to clear your head a bit. There’s a big world out there so let’s focus on our own health.

Expect the unexpected: Plan for life’s curveballs. Know that they are coming and there are ways to get around it whilst still feeling confident, still feeling happy, and still being able to get your workouts done and eat well, without having to start again.

Make positive nutrition choices: Educate yourself on the food you’re eating. Don’t diet, just eat healthy balanced meals. Choose the healthy option. For example if you want pasta, have what you want, but make a healthy option for yourself. I love pasta, I have pasta with my family every week, but I have it with a homemade red sauce.

Look after yourself inside out: We’re so focused on how we look on the outside, we don’t sit down and look inside and think about our triggers, our flaws, and how we could possibly change them.
