Top 10 tips for surviving those festive functions

Sail through the silly season in style with these simple strategies that will keep both your health and your wellbeing in check.

Festive spirit

Nobody likes the Christmas Grinch, so approach the party with a positive attitude. It’s a great time of year to reflect on your achievements and give yourself a pat on the back.

Dress appropriately

Adhere to the dress code, particularly if it’s a work party. Steer clear of anything too revealing or uncomfortable. If there’s a theme, try to embrace it and arrange a suitable outfit.

Pace yourself

Ensure you eat at the function and pay attention to your alcohol intake. Alternative alcoholic drinks with water or soft drink.

Ready to mingle

Festive occasions are a good time to get to know colleagues or distant relatives a bit better. Make sure your conversations are inclusive and avoid broaching awkward topics, such as pay rises or family feuds.

Party pal

Getting through a work party or family get-together can be easier with a friend at your side. You’ll have someone to chat to, dance with, or whisk you away from that nosey relative.

Avoid the gossip

It’s best to avoid becoming the next day’s talking point. Don’t use the occasion as an opportunity to complain about colleagues and/or employees, and treat everyone with respect.

Limit mobile use

Don’t be anti-social. Put the phone away and engage with fellow partygoers. If you do need to check your phone or email, excuse yourself politely and don’t do it mid-conversation.

Take a breather

Walk away for five minutes and get some fresh air if you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed. There’s no need to be the life of the party, and it’s OK to have some quiet time.

Pitch in

For a work function, make sure you thank the person who arranged the end-of-year drinks. For a family gathering, offer to bring a platter or drinks. You should also offer to to help tidy up throughout the event or at the end of the night.

Exit strategy

Have a plan in place for when you want to call it a night and head home. Family functions can be tricky at this time of the year, so it’s best work out how long you plan to stay before you head to the party.
