7 crystals to help you break bad habits for good

From kyanite to quartz, crystals are not only strikingly beautiful, they’re a simple, supportive tool that can help drive positive change in our lives.

You might be trying to quit alcohol, improve your eating habits or stop yourself from falling into certain harmful social habits.

Karma coach Mrinal Thandaoori says people will feel more empowered using crystals to support their attempts to break bad habits and build better ones.

“Crystals have their own energy, so when we bring them close to us, it can change our vibration and help create the transformation we’re trying to achieve,” Mrinal, of Crystal Dreaming Melbourne, says.

These are the top picks in crystals to help change unhealthy patterns and behaviours:

1.   Amethyst

A well-known purple crystal, but one not to be underestimated, amethyst is a good starting point when trying to transform yourself, according to energy healer Terri Lovell.

“Amethyst can help with anxiety, depression and addictive patterning,” Terri, of the Crystal HealingTemple, says.

“It’ll also clear your mind, open your intuition, and ground your energy.”

Keep it close to you, either by putting the stone under your pillow, or by wearing it on a necklace or in your pocket.

2.   Tiger iron

An ancient stone from Western Australia, tiger iron has “extreme power”, according to Mrinal.

“Its mix of minerals work together, powering each other, which can ignite your personal strength ‒ it really helps with willpower,” Mrinal says.

Unlike other crystals that are gentle in supporting your shift, tiger iron is very strong so you need to use it only in small bursts, she advises.

Mrinal suggests using a tumbled stone in a crystal grid or keeping it close during specific moments where you need strength.

3.   Carnelian

If you need motivation to make a positive change, then this beautiful orange gem is for you.

Carnelian really gives you a good shove in the right direction, explains Terri.

“It helps drive the change – it gives you the motivation to make that phone call, get a creative project going and become productive,” she says.

4.   Clear quartz

Having a piece of clear quartz by your side is a good idea when on the journey of internal change.

“It’s a very beautiful crystal that works at a core level for reprogramming,” Mrinal says.

Simply charge it with your intention and keep it with you in your bra or wear it as a piece of jewellery.

5.   Hematite

If you’re trying to kick a bad habit during times of stress, you’ll likely be at your weakest and fall off the wagon more easily.

“Hematite helps you stay calm as you go through the disruptive process of breaking a bad habit,” Terri says.

“It helps to clear pain that’s become stagnant or stuck, allowing the natural energy within the body to flow freely again.”

Mrinal adds that it may also help clear any negative thinking that pops up during the process.

6.   Kyanite

Another good option is this aluminium-rich rock that’s “protective against negative energies”, Mrinal says.

“It balances all the chakras and blasts through negativity – bad habits are created or entrenched when we are out of balance, so kyanite brings everything back into harmony,” she explains.

Often used to enhance mental clarity, apophyllite is a striking crystal with a unique shape.

“It reminds me a bit of clouds – it connects us to the higher realms and raises our vibrations,” Mrinal shares.
