What to expect from energy work
Curious to try reiki or kinesiology, but have no idea what to expect from a treatment? Here’s the lowdown.
While energy healing modalities and each individual practitioner can differ in their approach, here’s a rundown of what usually happens during a session.
“Generally the session will start with a discussion about anything the client wants to work on or is going on for them at the time,” explains reiki and kinergetics practitioner Alexis Hamer.
Set some goals
“I always get my clients to set an intention for the healing,” says Alexis.
Think about what it is you want to get from the treatment.
Keeping this in mind will help you let go of what no longer serves you and work towards what you want to bring into your life.

What happens during the treatment
A kinesiology session will usually involve muscle testing, where the practitioner tests the body to identify unconscious stresses.
It’s then time to get on the table, as you would for a massage, but you remain fully clothed.
The practitioner will aim to balance body with physical or energetic techniques, such as light touch, gentle massage, the use of tuning forks or flower essences, or affirmations, to name just a few.
In reiki, the practitioner will use their hands on or above different chakras/energy centres or in the person’s energy field.
Get comfortable – you might even find yourself falling asleep during the treatment.
“Most clients drift in and out of a deep relaxed state,” says Alexis.
“If the position you are in for your session is uncomfortable in any way (pillow height, etc), let your practitioner know.”
And while tears and strong emotions can be conjured up with energy work, if you feel overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to speak up – you may want some time out or additional support.

Preparing for your session
Given you have time to digest, eating and being hydrated ahead of your session will mean you won’t be distracted by hunger or thirst.
Use the bathroom beforehand and wear comfy clothes.
After your energy work session
Make sure you drink lots of water after your treatment, just as you would after a massage.
“This will help flush the toxins out of the body and speed up the healing/cleansing process,” says Alexis.
“The best way to manage any symptoms is to listen to your body. That may include a nap/extra sleep, time in sunshine and nature, or some peace and quiet.”
Take some time out (even if it’s just 15-20 minutes) after your appointment to re-centre, rather than immediately picking up your phone or jumping back into work.
“You may benefit from laying down and relaxing, having a nap, meditating or going for a walk in nature,” says Alexis.
