Linen blonde is the ultimate hair colour this season

Neutral-toned and universally flattering, linen blonde hair is proving to be in demand. Here’s how to wear this trending colour.

Hair trend forecasters are predicting hair shades will take a more neutral direction, with linen blonde shaping up to be the coolest colour this season.

Not quite ashy, not quite buttery, linen blonde is best described as a gentle, neutral-toned hue that has the brightness of a platinum blonde but without the cool-toned iciness.

Is linen blonde hair suitable for everyone?

L’Oréal Professional Artist and Chelsea Haircutters owner Peter Thomsen says he expects neutral tones to become a dominant trend for the year ahead as blonde hair, while it’s often associated with fairer skin shades, can be just as flattering on deeper-toned skin.

Due to its neutral undertone, linen blonde in particular is a universally flattering hair shade.

“I personally think linen blonde is a gorgeous trend; it complements all skin tones and eye colours,” Peter says.

“It’s all about neutrals done well, just like wearing a gorgeous linen set on a summer’s day.”

How to wear linen blonde hair

Blonde specialist Brielle Grzazek, based at Newcastle salon Blonde Republic, considers linen blonde the perfect summer shade for those transitioning to a lighter shade for the warmer months.

“Because it has neutral undertones, it’s going to work against all base tones and this is an especially important factor for clients lifting their hair from a darker base, particularly if they’re doing it gradually through a highlight or balayage technique,” Brielle says.

If you don’t want a high-contrast look, consider asking your colourist for a root smudge closer to your natural hair level, or ask for a deeper shade within the linen blonde colour family.

For those not wanting to commit to a full head of blonde, consider asking your colourist for a more subtle variation, such as ombré balayage on the ends or even linen blonde underlights.

Is linen blonde hair colour a high-maintenance shade?

In terms of the upkeep involved, linen blonde is no different to other shades of blonde and typically requires considerable time and effort to maintain, especially if your hair is naturally dark.

For optimum results, you’ll want to invest in regular hair treatments and toning products to reduce any chance of brassiness developing.

Just be sure not to overdo it as excessive use of purple toner can transform neutral tones into cooler ones, potentially losing the linen blonde shade in the process.

Will going linen blonde damage my hair?

Any hair-colouring services that involve lightening and bleaching will damage the hair; however, the level of damage is very much dependent on how well you care for your tresses.

Make sure to incorporate bonding treatments, protein masks, and other products proven to protect and repair colour-treated hair.

Regular trims and limiting the use of heat tools where possible can also help keep your mane – and your colour – in beautiful shape.
