The liquid hair trend celebrities are loving

Ultra-shiny, straight and silky soft, liquid hair is raging with celebrities including J-Lo and Kim K on board. Here’s how to get the look.

Super sleek, shiny and with a healthy amount of movement, the liquid hair trend is all about polish – and lots of it.

“The trend started with famous faces like Kim Kardashian sporting ultra-sleek, straight hair that’s so shiny you could apply your lipstick in its reflection,” EdwardsAndCo style director Matt Jones says.

The best cut for a liquid hair look

“Typically the look is done on hair that’s longer than shoulder length,” Matt says.

“The hair is blow dried straight and flat without volume and then ironed so that the cuticle becomes reflective.”

You’ll need the right cut to really perfect the look.

“I would suggest asking for a cut that strengthens the baseline of your hair to make it look thick,” Matt says.

“That way the look has a real impact. Avoid layers as this will add too much texture.”

Give your hair some love

Liquid hair is all about creating almost perfect hair so you’ll need to show your locks some major TLC to ensure they’re in great shape, according to colourist Jaye Edwards.

“I would absolutely recommend a good shampoo, conditioner and masque if you plan on recreating this look,” Jaye says.

“The healthier your hair is the better this look will work for you.”

Two methods to create liquid hair

There are two ways to achieve liquid hair.

The first option is a keratin treatment, which achieves the straight effect, and has more longevity.

Jaye explains the procedure helps to close down the cuticle to remove frizz and curl and help hair to sit smooth naturally.

“A keratin treatment involves applying a product that smooths over the outer layer of the cuticle to make hair manageable and glossy,” she says.

“It can also help to reduce the look of split ends. Once the product has developed for the appropriate time, it is then ironed into the hair to seal it.”

Jaye says it’s a good idea to consult with your hair stylist to check if this is a suitable treatment for you as some keratin treatments can alter the colour of your hair, and can make blondes golden and browns brassier.

Another, less permanent way to achieve a liquid hair look is by using a trusty hair straightener and hair dryer.

Start by prepping your hair with product to achieve the sleek, smooth effect of liquid hair.

Jaye suggests looking for a product that effectively smooths down the cuticle and is resistant to humidity.

This means moisture will bead off it and humidity won’t damage your blowout.

Once you’ve blow dried your hair straight, you’ll need to go over it with a hair straightener to smooth the strands.

“My hot tip is to take your time with the iron and make each pass of the iron really slow,” Jaye says.

“That way the heat will actually seal the cuticle.”
