Expert tips for packing a travel-friendly make-up bag

Want to travel light as well as feel ready for every occasion? Here’s how to pack a make-up bag with everything you need without weighing you down.

Packing for a trip usually involves a lot of outfits taking up precious space in your luggage, many of which never end up being worn, and your make-up bag is no different.

Rather than risk your suitcase being over its weight limit, you can make your make-up and skincare travel-friendly by simplifying and condense your essential products.

How to get more mileage out of your travel make-up bag

If you find yourself packing a red lippy “just in case”, despite the fact you never wear bold lipsticks, then chances are you have a tendency to overpack.

Here’s how to pack what you need – without the bulk.

Downsize your kitbag

Perth make-up artist Emily Djamil says her tip for a travel-friendly make-up case is to purposely take a small bag forcing her to reduce the number of products she can pack.

Pack multi-tasking products

Emily says taking multi-use products means she has what she needs without the clutter.
“For example, a lipstick can double as a cream blush and my matte bronzer can double as a contour and a warm eyeshadow,” Emily says.

“Also, sunscreen is so important when you are travelling.

“I go for a product that is a moisturiser, sunscreen and primer all in one, which is not only a great time-saver, but another multi-purpose product.”

Cull your itinerary

Melbourne make-up artist Kiandra Entwistle says it’s important to be pragmatic when condensing your make-up and skincare essentials.

“Assess where you will be going and really evaluate what make-up or beauty products you will need.

“I know I’m the type of person to overpack for any holiday as I like to be prepared for any situation, so I really benefit from planning ahead,” Kiandra says.

“For example, if you know you are going to be travelling in a hot climate and will be sweating or swimming a lot, you might not need the entire bottle of your full coverage foundation and instead should factor in some mattifying or water-proof products.”

Decant and downscale

A great tip is to stock up on minis and samples of your favourite products, but sometimes they’re not as easy to acquire for particular make-up and skincare items.

This is where the beauty of reusable travel bottles come in handy; not only can they be used to store a variety of products and formulations, they can be washed and refilled, reducing unnecessary waste.

“When travelling, I’ve saved so much space not only in my professional kit, but also in my personal make-up bag by condensing my products into smaller tubes and containers,” Kiandra says.

Travel-sized refillable atomisers are another handy item as they allow you to pack your favourite perfumes without the unnecessary luggage weight or risk of breaking and potentially leaking in your luggage.
