Sore throat 101: Helping relieve sore throats in the family

Painful, scratchy throats are a common complaint in winter. Our handy hacks may help soothe the seasonal sting.

Winter may be a wonderland for some, but all too often it means kids coming home from school complaining of a sore throat.

Before you know it, the whole family is suffering and it’s no fun – a sore and burning throat can be miserable, putting children off their food and a damper on activities.

Fortunately, irritated throats are common with most caused by minor illnesses and able to be treated at home1.

Here are some simple and savvy steps to soothe the soreness and turn frowns upside down.

1. Rest and recharge

When anyone in the family has a sore throat, rest and sleep are their friend.

Encourage the family member to take it easy and catch some extra zzzz’s.

It will not only help them feel better, but can help give their immune system the boost it needs to help fight off pesky winter bugs2.

Get them snuggled up with a cosy blanket and favourite books and let their body do the healing while they snooze.

2. Fluids to the rescue

Dehydration can worsen throat discomfort, so keep up the hydration.

If your child has a sore throat, encourage them to sip on fluids throughout the day, aiming for plenty of water, soothing herbal teas and broths3.

Adding a touch of honey can provide additional relief, thanks to its natural soothing properties4.

3. Soft foods for tender tummies

When throats are feeling tender, it’s time to turn to gentle, easy-to-swallow foods for kids.

Yoghurts and soups are good ways to offer nourishment and comfort5.

As well as providing nutrients, their cool or warm temperatures can help soothe the throat.

4. Betadine’s sore throat remedies

Use Betadine’s Ready to Use Sore Throat Gargle 120ml when a sore throat strikes.
