The hottest new beauty looks of the future

Futuristic beauty is trending this season, inspiring creative and experimental celestial make-up, hair and nail looks that are out of this world.

Many of us have been playing it safe for years when it comes to the way we look.

Neutral eyeshadow, muted lips and subtle hair highlights are all easy, safe options, but they hardly reflect a sense of creativity or fun.

If you have been thinking about presenting a fresh new you to the world, there is no better time, with the current trend of futuristic beauty.

Adelaide-based make-up artist Jemma Millar says the look — which is all about colour, sparkle and creativity — is having its moment.

“Creative make-up and futuristic trends have been explored by make-up artists for years and years, but more recently these trends have been embraced by everyday people and on social media platforms,” Jemma says.

The make-up artist credits American teen drama series Euphoria and other shows for helping to make the glittery, experimental look more accessible.

But if you are worried you won’t be able to perfect this look, don’t be.

Jemma says with this trend, “there are absolutely no rules when it comes to make-up, beauty and fashion”.

“Experimental make-up is a true art form,” she notes.

“As an artist myself, some of my best looks are created when I don’t put any pressure on myself and just wing it and do whatever I feel comes to me in that moment.”

Futuristic hair styles

From copper and peach to pastel pink and purple, kaleidoscopic hair colours are a major part of the look.

More often than not, fashion colours don’t require permanent dye.

However, the hair does need to be lifted (bleached) to a light enough base for the colour to show up, which is why it is easier for natural and bottle blondes to switch up their colour compared to those with darker hair.

Want to update your hairstyle to reflect the futuristic trend?

Try bubble braids or a sleek, spiky up-do, both of which have soared in popularity.

Celestial make-up looks

The great thing about futuristic make-up is it is open to interpretation.

For some make-up artists, the trend involves a strong neon eye.

For others, the focus is on pearlescent skin and a bold lip.

For a Euphoria-inspired look, Jemma recommends a little bedazzle here and there.

“Utilising some rhinestones into your make-up is a great entry point,” she says.

“Pop a singular rhinestone in the inner corner of your eye with an adhesive such as eyelash glue.

“It’s such a cute and easy place to start for beginners wanting to experiment with their make-up.”

The House of Wellness resident beauty expert Jade Kisnorbo gave models neon eyes at this year’s Australian Fashion Week.

“A strong neon liner is one of the quickest yet most effective ways to achieve a statement make-up look, and it looks best when paired with a simple, natural-looking base,” Jade advises.

Futuristic nails

Another big part of the futuristic beauty trend is a celestial theme, which draws on inspiration from starry night skies.

A fun way to capture that theme is on your nails — think shiny chrome finishes, three-dimensional embellishments and nail art depicting stars and moons.

Emma Forrest, from Melbourne’s Buff Nails Studios, has noticed a nail art revival in the wake of Covid-19.

“The past two years have been spent sans nail art for most Australians, so I think many people are going extra hard in terms of creativity and original nail art requests,” Emma says.
