The ’90s-inspired hair trends you need to get on board with in 2023

Is it time to change up your look? Here are the hottest hair trends that are going viral in 2023.

From TikTok to hair salons and runways, there is a new wave of hair trends coming our way this year – and be ready to take inspiration from a past era.

“We are seeing the renaissance of ‘90s hair across Australia,” Gabby Lincoln, educator at Eco Salon Supplies, says.

Taking cues from beauty bombshells like Pamela Anderson and Alicia Silverstone, here are some of the hottest hair trends we’re going to see in 2023.

Butterfly hair

The big, bouncy hair made famous in the ‘90s and ‘00s is having a revival right now as we’re seeing a fresh take on the classic ‘do.

“The butterfly haircut is really going to be the stand-out style for 2023,” Benjamin Martin, Session Stylist and Director at XVI Collective, says.

Butterfly hair involves a blend of a few standout trends combined into one.

This means plenty of layers, volume and length that resembles butterfly wings.

“It’s Jennifer Aniston’s iconic Rachel hair look without the volume in the top and similar to a grown-out wolf cut,” Benjamin says.

“Beautiful seamless layers framing the face, strong forward graduation with layers trimming the jawline.”

It gives the impression of long and voluminous hair without dragging down your features. And thanks to its chin-length layers, you can shape it to frame your face perfectly.

“The great thing about this style is it suits most face shapes, and it’s really easy to do at home,” Benjamin says.

‘90s bombshell blowout

To complement the Butterfly haircut, we’re taking further cues from past decades.

Specifically, it’s all about volume and big blowouts.

“Bolder styling will include big, bouncy blow dries,” Gabby says.

“These are great as they last days.”

“They don’t have to be perfectly smooth.

“The bigger and fluffier they get, the better they look!”

Bright blonde

Move over bronde and toned-down blonde shades, says Gabby.

In 2023, we’ll be moving towards bright and unapologetic golden hair.

“Australians are moving past those ashier, even ‘creamier’ blondes and towards golden tones (butter, honey blondes) that shimmer in the summer sun,” she explains.

You can see these shimmering looks from the likes of Margot Robbie and Anya Taylor Joy, both enjoying a fresh take on the classic blonde this year.

The curve cut

Those with fine or thin hair rejoice.

This is the ultimate way to get the trendiest hair of the season without it looking flat as soon as you leave the salon.

The “curve” cut, also known as the “U” shape hairstyle, is similar to the “V” cut from a few years ago.

The trendy haircut involves shorter sides and a longer back and middle, which creates a “U” or curved effect.

This gives the appearance of thicker and fuller hair.

Of course, it’s not just for those with fine hair.

It’s also a perfect choice for thicker and curly locks, as it will make them appear healthier and stronger.
