How My Room supports Aussie kids and families with cancer

My Room Children’s Cancer Charity is working towards a 100 per cent cure for childhood cancers.

On average, about 1000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer each year in Australia and My Room Children’s Cancer Charity provides support to those kids and their families.

The volunteer-led organisation, which was established in 1993, focuses on providing family support and funding clinical care, research and medical equipment.

“Support is really crucial for families that are going through this journey,” My Room chief executive officer Margaret Zita says.

“We not only support people through financial and emotional stress, but it’s also just being there for families.

“We are there to listen and have a chat with and continue to give them the strength to forge forward.”

The charity is also passionate about providing clinical care for childhood cancer patients as many require ongoing needs, such as a dietitian or a physiotherapist, which enhances the level of care and outcomes for children with cancer.

“We just want families to make sure they can concentrate on what’s really important and that is being by their child’s side and not having to worry about all the other day-to-day distractions and concerns they have in the background,” Margaret says.

My Room Children’s Charity runs several fundraising events throughout the year, including an annual gala ball and telethon.

The Chemist Warehouse run club will also raise funds for My Room at the Melbourne Marathon on October 2.

“My Room does a fantastic job to support those families with young children with cancer,” Chemist Warehouse chief operating officer Mario Tascone says.

The run club started in Melbourne during the pandemic as a way to build some camaraderie and exercise during the lengthy lockdowns and has now expanded across the nation.

“It’s been a good bonding experience for our staff,” Mario says.
