Self-care for beauty: The best DIY pampering tips to help you feel good

Self-care can enhance all elements of your life, and your beauty routine is no different. Here’s how to up your pampering game – you deserve it.

The practice of self-care has been recognised in recent years for its potential to reduce stress levels, improve our work-life balance and prevent mental burnouts.

In its most basic form, self-care is actively doing things to look after ourselves, such as getting adequate sleep, exercising regularly, eating a nutritious diet, and establishing work-life balance.

It’s also simply doing things that make you feel good, and for beauty lovers that might mean a manicure, facial or hair treatment.

You don’t need to spend lots of money or wait for a professional service to boost your self-care beauty practice, though.

DIY pampering is all about showing yourself some care.

Self-care beauty can be different for everyone

For content creator and one-half of YouTube channel, The Mescia Twins, Olivia Mescia, self-care is all about winding down and getting cosy.

“To me, self-care is a nice warm shower, exfoliating with a fruity smelling body wash, freshly washed hair and face masks snuggled up on the couch with Netflix on and some takeaway or choc-covered strawberries,” Olivia says.

“My advice is to incorporate a good exfoliating product to your self-care routine once or twice a week.

“I also love a good sheet mask for hydration because I think they provide a great starting point for elevating your self-care.”

Ways to incorporate self-care into your beauty routine

Nurture your skin

“Start with the basics – a good cleanser, moisturiser and SPF routine are something everyone should be doing,” dermal science student and skinfluencer, Madeleine O’Brien says.

“Once you’ve got that down, introduce habits that can make yourself feel more confident.”

Love your body

When it comes to at-home pampering, much of the focus is on the face and hair, but according to Madeleine, it should not come at the expense of our bodies.

“Our bodies often miss out on TLC, so taking time to exfoliate and moisturise, especially with a body lotion that smells amazing is a great self-care step,” Madeleine says.

“There are plenty of great affordable body care products too – brands like QV and CeraVe are some of my favourites.”

Invest in some at-home beauty treatments

Take your self-care beauty routine next level by investing in some home pampering equipment.

Everything from at-home facial steamers, LED masks, laser hair removal devices, and teeth-whitening tools have surged in demand since the pandemic and it’s making Australians more self-sufficient and skilled in the self-care beauty department.
