How to spend Christmas Day if you don’t feel festive
Endless carols, flashing fairy lights and presents are not everyone’s idea of fun. Here are some Christmas alternatives to help you enjoy the day.
Does the thought of Christmas trees, festive tunes and gifts make you squirm?
You’re not alone.
Whether you don’t celebrate the event’s religious side or just don’t get into the festive spirit, there are still many different ways you can enjoy the day, be it by yourself or with others.
The most recent Census reported that 40.7 per cent of Australians follow a religion other than Christianity, and more than 10 million practice no religion at all.
So, for millions, Christmas is just another day on the calendar.
But with stores closed and the day filled endlessly with carols and gifts, how do you spend it in a non-festive way?
Here are the best ways to spend Christmas Day if you don’t plan on taking part in the festivities.
1. Host a barbecue
Christmas time in Australia is usually pretty sunny and warm, so it’s the perfect excuse to fire up the barbecue and gather your friends for a feast.
If you don’t own a barbecue, try a public space instead.
A recent study found that 83 per cent of Aussies believe that public barbecues are a great way to meet others in the community.
2. Work up a sweat
Get a jump-start on your New Years’ Resolutions by hitting the gym or doing a workout at home.
This is a great way to increase your endorphins, lowering stress levels and enhance your feel-good hormones.
3. Call your loved ones
There’s nothing like catching up with those you love the most.
However, it’s become exceedingly difficult in recent years to meet up with those who live overseas or have plans.
But giving them a call is a great way to reconnect, even if it’s not face-to-face.

4. Hit the beach
Australian summers are full of sun and warmth, so why not spend the afternoon between the sand and waves?
Whether you want to invite friends over for a picnic or pass the time relaxing under the rays by yourself, it’s a great way to spend the day.
5. Be a tourist in your own city
It’s time to get out of the house and explore your city.
While most stores will likely be closed during the day, you can walk the streets and explore the scenes with a smaller crowd passing by.
