Why the latte make-up trend has social media buzzing

Not just for coffee aficionados, the latte make-up trend works well for everyone. Here’s how to create this naturally sun-kissed look.

Latte make-up is the latest beauty trend to go viral, following on from its popular predecessors, crystal make-up and the vanilla girl aesthetic

It seems just about everyone is wearing the look, which has amassed more than 150 million views on TikTok and captured the attention of a list of celebs, including style icon Hailey Bieber.

It’s no wonder – this new take on a naturally sun-kissed look focuses on beautiful neutral tones that flatter all.

Latte make-up 101

Picture a perfectly brewed, milky latte – swirls of brown, soft caramels and a touch of creamy gloss.

Not just for coffee aficionados, the latte look suits all skin tones and eye colours.

According to ABIA Bridal/Formal Make-up Artist of the Year 2022 Jane Kingsavanh, it’s also easy to create as you don’t need much know-how or a full professional make-up kit.

“You can achieve it with a lot of the existing make-up products you have at home,” Jane says.

Embrace your natural beauty

MAGAP Australian Make-up Artist of the Year 2023 Chereine Waddell says latte make-up is all about celebrating authentic beauty with a monochromatic look in warm, earthy tones.

“(It) focuses on enhancing the wearer’s features with a soft, glowing complexion … accentuating eyes, cheeks and lips with warm neutral shades that harmonise with a diverse range of skin tones,” Chereine explains.

“It’s a timeless style that radiates a refined, sun-kissed glow.”

Latte make-up is cool for summer… and winter

Just like your favourite brew, latte make-up is loved for its versatility and complements a range of occasions.

“For casual day outings, it adds an element of refinement, enhancing a person’s inherent charm without being overly dramatic,” Chereine says.

“At events, latte make-up brings an air of sophistication, exuding understated elegance that’s sure to turn heads.”

But, while social media has coined it the look of the summer, Jane points out it doesn’t mean Australians stuck in winter should miss out on the fun.

“Although it’s based more on a summer bronze look, it can translate into a luxurious winter vibe as well,” Jane says.

“You can add a bit more warmth and colour to the look to suit the chilly weather by applying a warm terracotta blush on the cheeks and a little more rich pigment on the lips.”

How to recreate the latte make-up look

Start with a flawless base

Jane recommends prepping your skin for a more flawless base.

“Use a tinted moisturiser or a light foundation, and apply a light layer,” she suggests.

“For a more glam event look, I would add concealer to highlight under the eyes, centre of forehead, bridge of the nose and chin.”

Focus on eyes and brows

Naturally define your brows with brow gel or powder, Chereine says.

As for the eyes, she recommends creating some depth by softly blending in warm and earthy tones.

“Add a touch of molten copper eyeshadow for that mesmerising glow.”

Warm up cheeks

“Use a warm cream bronzer or contour along the hollows of the cheeks, perimeters of the face such as temples (and) jawline, and also where the sun would hit the face,” Jane says.

“Set the bronzed areas with a powder bronzer where you shaped the face and then highlight the high points of the face – such as cheekbones, inner corners of the eyes, brow bones and cupid bow – with the highlighter.”

Top off with neutral lips

Lastly, Chereine recommends finishing off your latte girl glow-up with a nude or soft-brown lipstick or lip gloss, just slightly above your natural lip line for an ombré effect.
