Why the ‘everything shower’ is the self-care trend you’ll love

Rather than a quick wash and rinse, an everything shower is a self-care trend where you take time to truly indulge. Here’s how to have one and what you’ll need.

Lingering in the shower is the latest wellness practice to send TikTok followers into a frenzy, with the “everything shower” trend clocking up over 280 million views.

More than a quick soap and wash to get clean, it’s a head-to-toe grooming ritual that includes any number of pampering treatments before, during and after showering – from dry brushing and hair oiling to applying a face mask and slathering on a serum.

And fans of this self-care routine claim the everything shower can help boost your wellbeing too.

Before you jump in, here’s what you’ll want to know.

Mindfulness and the everything shower

Wellness trainer and mindset specialist Heidi Horne says this trend turns a typical shower into an experience of self-love by giving us time to ourselves.

“In a way, it’s a mindfulness practice (that) allows us to switch off and be in the present moment,” Heidi says.

For example, she says, sometimes we experience Sunday night anxiety before going back to work or study, and an everything shower can help lower our stress levels.

“It helps you feel like you’ve given something to yourself before you give anything to everyone else,” Heidi says.

How to make the most of the everything shower

Psychotherapist Eugenie Pepper says the key is to create a soothing ambience by incorporating different elements that promote relaxation while showering.

She says this may include a personalised combination of playing calming music, using scented candles and essential oils, practising positive visualisation, and following a luxurious skincare routine.

“I often get my busy clients who say they don’t have time to meditate to try meditation or mindfulness in the shower simply by focusing on the water touching their skin, the sounds, (and) using all their senses,” Eugenie says.
